There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Commons can be a steep learning experience and sometimes our methods are not obvious. Please treat this as a minor learning experience and not as me jumping up and down angry. There are two problems with your handling of the subject DR.

First, you cannot simply remove a DR from the log and the {{Delete}} tag from the image -- the DR needs to be closed in the ordinary course of things. Closing in the ordinary course is far faster (Admins use a script) and leaves a {{Kept}} tag on the image talk page so that possible future DRs are headed off.

Second, except for correcting minor spelling and grammar errors, we never delete text -- even our own -- from a DR. Instead we use strikethroughs:

"<s>I have changed my mind and want to eliminate these words.</s>"

will display as this:

"I have changed my mind and want to eliminate these words."

If you have questions, you may ask them here, at Commons:Village pump or on my talk page.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 12:30, 21 August 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, the possibility to overwrite files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Trijnsteltalk 15:04, 27 June 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File:1921 Hillman 11.jpg[edit]

is this picture okay for the site? --Goobakdc (talk) 15:58, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It is hard to tell. If the photograph is from the United States and taken before 1923, the {{PD-1923}} license would work. I use it for English works as well. Certainly 1921 or 1922 would be a good guess for the date, but it is not good to guess, and cars last for more than a few years. So I would say with the current level of information you provide, the picture is not okay for the site. Bob Burkhardt (talk) 16:57, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Removal of the Ponca Indians - Sources+[edit]

Hello Bob.

I've recently read the article by Carl Schurz you posted entitled "Removal of the Ponca Indians".

I am currently studying History at University and am writing a thesis on the relationships between The American Indians and the government/military officials. This article would be of invaluable use for my study.

I was wondering if it would be possible for you to tell me where you acquired this document. Unfortunately my University will not allow me to cite wikisource or Wikipedia commons as a source on my paper, but would allow me to use it if I showed where the document originally came from.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you very much, Fil.

Hi Fil,

I think it was a U.S. government pamphlet of some kind. I believe my source was a microfilm of the Carl Schurz papers in the Library of Congress that I got at one of the Harvard University libraries. There is a citation on Google Books:

http://books.google.com/books/about/Removal_of_the_Ponca_Indians.html?id=mRZMngEACAAJ

I used an electronic PDF reproduction of the microfilm, but I don't have that at hand. It seems to be available through Amazon for a price. I can't say with certainty it was from his papers, but I think it very likely. Harvard also had copies of the original documents which I used a lot, so there is a chance it was one of those, but I think it was from his papers.

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

This file is a duplicate of File:Theodosia Bartow Burr.jpg. The source of that file says it depicts the wife of Aaron Burr, not his daughter. It's the only picture I could find of Theodosia Bartow Burr so it would be sad if this isn't her. Could you check if your description is in error? --Vera (talk) 13:50, 22 November 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I believe my description is correct, based on the Appletons' article. You can read the Appletons' bio yourself. Theodosia's (Burr's daughter's) portion of the bio is at the bottom. The link to the article is available on the picture file. Appletons' does say the representation is of his daughter, and a search of the database linked to by the picture file says the same thing. I did the search using "Theodosia Burr". Reading Theodosia's portion of the Appletons' article I can see how the two might get confused, either by Jacques Reich (the Appletons' artist) or by your source. Bob Burkhardt (talk) 17:16, 22 November 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
My source, the Museum of American Finance, has this two piece that is labeled as Burr with his wife. I'm inclined to think that this is the original and your file is a reproduction. The quality of the two piece is better and is labeled as being the work of H. Wright Smith. Looking at drawings that come up when looking for him here on Commons makes it look like that he predates your drawing by about a century, see "Printmakers include William Birch, H.B. Hall, J.B. Longacre, Max Rosenthal and H. Wright Smith." from 1783. --Vera (talk) 12:05, 28 November 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I found this in the National Portrait Gallery that looks likely to be the actual original. It seems it really is her daughter unfortunately. --Vera (talk) 12:24, 28 November 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
